Path to Joy 9: Kindness

You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you. โ John Bunyan On an end-of-summer evening beside the Allegheny River, as twilight settled over yachts docked at the Fox Chapel marina, I chatted with members ofย Rotaryย International, an organization I thought focused onย business development. Turns out the profits Rotary members seek come from bridging cultures and connecting continents. They champion peace, fight illiteracy and poverty, help people get access to clean water and sanitation, and fight disease. Rotaryโs newest cause is to protect our planet and its resources. Wow! How exhilarating to meet people who prioritize the 9thย Path to Joy, Benevolence: good will, good wishes and wanting good for others. An old saying advises, โEverything that goes around, comes around.โย The Bibleโs Galatians 6:7 adds, โWhat a man sows, that he will also reap.โ The Mayo Clinic finds that sowing benevolence does reap a joyful harvest. They report, โKindness has been shown to increase self-esteem, empathy and compassion, and improve mood. It can decrease blood pressure and cortisol, a hormone directly correlated with stress levels. People who give of themselves in a balanced way also tend to be healthier and live longer.โย Read more.ย Everyday Healthย lists seven ways being kind improves health and well-being, by: Reducing anxiety and depression Improving heart health Managing diabetes Read moreย ย Succeed and Soarโsย Original Path to Joy #9ย postย stated, โBenevolence is good will, good wishes and wanting good for others. Path to Joy: 9th of 12 – Where the Stars at Night are Really Big and Bright

I believe very much in the idea of kindness. … It lies at the core of beauty. โ Jan Morris One of my happiest memories is of driving around the big island of Hawaii with a Swiss woman who taught me to sing, in German, โThe stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas!โ My goal was to surprise a darling friend made during those six weeks on Hawaiiโs eastern side, in the rainy jungle. Karin rehearsed me over and over, insisting that I get the Germanic pronunciation right. Two days ago, I asked my German friend to remind me how to write those words. Thorsten EMailed back at 2am Hamburg time: Die Sterne in der Nacht sind groร und hell, tief im Herzen von Texas! Twenty-plus years after circling Hawaiiโs gorgeous coast, I think of the 9th Path to Joy and how we can all be stars in our own worlds while shining big and bright in the lives of others. As Bishop Desmond Tutu said, โDo your little bit of good where you are; itโs those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.โ Benevolence is good will, good wishes and wanting good for others. Beneficence is the joy of putting those intentions into action. Seek joy and stay safe! PSย Jan Morris’ full quote is: I believe very much in the idea of kindness. I think kindness is the answer to all our problems. It lies at the core of beauty.ย Source:ย Battleship Yamato This Postโs Featured Art, โBeneficence,” An Illustrated Wisdom โSmall acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.โ Howard Zinnย ย 1922-2010 What I like best about the picture I like the starbursts that, on second thought, look like fireworks. Why Ever since I first saw the Leonid Meteor Showers [behind the screen of a drive-in movie] and saw those shooting stars sprinting across the sky, Iโve understood how spectacular and uplifting unexpected lights in the night can be. Fireworks displays have the same effect. Theyโre such gifts to the eye the heart and the spirit. Theyโre so uplifting. So joyful. What does this picture teach me? Shooting stars are natural parts of the universe, just like kindness.ย How joyful if our lives glittered with lots more. How can these insights lead to joy? I think these words answer best, If you light a lamp for someone else, it will also brighten your path. — Buddha NOTE: These โPaths to Joyโ are adapted from The Treasure Chest, an old book I found years ago. Page 117 contained “The Twelve Rules of Happiness.” Of special delight is using paints markers and ink to illustrate meditations inspired by this wisdom. The technique is adapted from the book Visual Journaling, Going Deeper Than Words, by Barbara Ganim and Susan Fox. The Road from Casper

Life is mostly froth and bubble, Two things stand like stone, Kindness in another’s trouble, Courage in your own. —ย ย Adam Lindsay Gordon A MEDITATION: The Road from Casper The time has come to frame my letter from the Flying J Truck Stop. The penciled message contains a business card with hand-written promise of โOne free Lg Fountain drinkโ should I ever drive through Casper, Wyoming again. The note also delivered the two postcards I regretted not buying, plus my payment. Iโve kept them for decades because beneficence flew thousands of miles, from a stranger, above a sometimes-stingy, mean-spirited world. Plus, the writerโs kind response delivered the brightening energy that uplifted my life, especially when considering Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschelโs words, โ In every moment, something sacred is at stake.โ Purchase “Road to Casper” photograph.
