Today, weโ€™re bombarded with health advice from every direction โ€“ in TV commercials, online and on social media, in newspapers and magazines, and from friends and family.
But how do we know which advice we should take and which we should ignore? How can we identifyย badย advice โ€“ advice that isnโ€™t supported by evidence or that could even be harmful? Here are some signs that can indicate that we might not want to trust something, or at least that we should investigate further:

  1. Celebrity/influencer endorsements or first-person stories โ€“ celebrities usually make money to endorse products and/or may not have the expertise to evaluate whether they’re safe and effective. Anyone can claim that something did or didnโ€™t work for them; even if they are telling the truth that doesnโ€™t mean your experience would be the same.
  2. Exaggerated claims โ€“ if someone claims that something can cure/treat/prevent a wide range of illnesses, thatโ€™s a red flag.
  3. Claims of exclusive information (โ€œhereโ€™s whatย theyย donโ€™t want you to know!โ€) or inflammatory language to make you feel surprised or afraid (โ€œthis common ingredient isย poisoningย you!โ€) – these are designed to grab your attention and make you less likely to check the information.
  4. AI-generated imagery โ€“ reliable sources generally will avoid using these. Here are some tips for spotting AI-generatedย images.
