Your Heroic Heart #9: Fire
Heroes are ordinary people who do extraordinary things. Anonymous Andrew Carnegie was thirteen when his family moved from Scotland. After they settled in Allegheny City, Pittsburgh, he earned $1.50 a week, working twelve to sixteen hours a day in a cotton factory. About thirteen years later, when drafted into the U.S. Army during the Civil War, the young man paid $900 to have someone serve in his place. [A common custom back then.] $900 in 1861 would be $32,250 in 2024. While working his way from messenger to secretary to telegraph operator, Carnegie built contacts with wealthy businessmen, like B. F. Jones, founder of the steel mill where I eventually worked. Another was Colonel James Anderson who allowed Carnegie access to his private library. Inspired by the Colonel’s kindness, Carnegie vowed to build as many libraries as possible, to give poor youth chances to develop their minds. Between 1883 and 1929, over 2,500 were built. At one point, Carnegie said, “It is now thirteen years since I ceased to accumulate wealth and began to distribute it. I could never have succeeded in either had I stopped with having enough to retire upon, but nothing to retire to.” One activity he retired to was the creation and endowment of the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. It exists to honor and support heroes and their dependents, including, Harry Amster of Clarkdale, Arizona. The meat dealer was 23 on April 27, 1915 when he tried to rescue toddlers from a fiery, wood frame house. In Sylvania, Georgia, Quillie Addison [a 36-year-old janitor], saved William Z. Kemp from a home so engulfed in flame, no one else would enter. When a 3-inch pipe carrying natural gas erupted, Matilda Aloisio offered her hand and foot to pull Henry Green from the pit of ten-foot high flames. Nominate a Hero. COMMENT. Myths tell of gods creating starry constellations for heroes The word comes demi [half, unfinished, almost]-god and to watch over, to protect. Imagine a world where everyone goes to bed a hero. Send Off to Summer
How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. – Winnie the Pooh From this marina, I watch yachts bob gently from eastmost to western horizon [click on video below]. Behind me, muted music bounces beneath a hundred conversations. Before me, green hills and the Allegheny River refresh the wind. Allegheny River. Depending on source, the name means, “best flowing river of the hills” or “fine river” or other lovely names from various First Nations [Algonquin, Lenape, Seneca], who lived along this waterway thousands of years before Columbus left Europe. In 2008, nineteen-year-old, Katie Spotz was the first-known person to swim the 325 miles from Warren, Pennsylvania, into New York State, and past this Fox Chapel Yacht Club. A few miles west, this water joins the Monongahela. The mingling creates the Ohio River that, 981 miles later, becomes the Mississippi. It flows into the Gulf of Mexico that becomes the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, mists becomes clouds that rain, perhaps onto the hills in Warren, Pennsylvania and the river begins again. The third Wednesday of August, I enjoyed the Pittsburgh Business Exchange’s annual “Send Off to Summer.” As with that’s summery, I think of Brooke Davis’ words, “So for now I say goodbye to this chapter of my life, and I look forward to what comes next.” Next was a short drive to Bob’s Garage, a colorful bar twinkling with thousands of little white lights. As folks sing karaoke, I consider attempting Prince’s “U Got The Look.” How much worse could I be? [Okay, a lot.] As the thought that summer will return after autumn, winter and spring, I wonder about voice lessons. I embrace these anonymous words, “Set your Goals High and always Dream Big. Crushing Conditions
I feel the capacity to care is the thing which gives life its deepest significance. — Pablo Casals The “Your Heroic Heart” series is inspired Succeed and Soar’s August 21, 2021 post. There, Eleanor Roosevelt said, “We do not have to become heroes overnight. Just a step at a time.” After the Carnegie family left Scotland in 1848, they settled in Allegheny, now part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There, Andrew and his father worked in a cotton factory. The teenager would have worked 12 to 16 hours a day. and earned—at most—$1.50 a week. In time, the bobbin boy became one of the world’s wealthiest men. He invested much effort and resources into ending West Indies and Asian colonization. When the United States bought the Philippines from Spain for $20 million [over $757 million in 2024 dollars], Carnegie offered to purchase the islands for the same amount to assure those people’s freedom and democracy. Six years later, Carnegie dedicated a fortune to honor, “deeds of heroism where men or women are injured or lose their lives in attempting to preserve or rescue their fellows.” For their actions following a 1954 sewer excavation cave-in, three men were honored by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. In trying to rescue Richard Fisher, who’d been buried to his neck. 20-year-old construction worker Nicholas A. Bruno, was the first to swing over the edge, followed by Arlin Vance and John Weaver. Within 30 seconds, a second, massive section of earth shoved shoring and timbers forward. Bruno, seven feet below ground, was pinned between the shoring and sustained severe internal injuries. 27-year-old John Weaver was caught at the hips and legs. A worker atop the wall freed him. Weaver suffered a fractured pelvis, torn muscles and bruises. He was disabled nine weeks. A timber pinned Arlin G. Vance’s legs, but he freed himself. With others, Vance raised some shoring and sawed away other portions. Vance’s chest and shoulder were wrenched. After two hours , Bruno was freed. Fisher had died of suffocation. Bruno was rushed to a hospital but died of his injuries the following day. Six months later, and two days before Thanksgiving, 27-year-old Alden Hartz rescued a woman who fell into a hole 70 feet deep. Catherine Murphy had been crossing a field that collapsed into an abandoned coal mine. Because the hole’s sides were unstable, others wouldn’t enter the cave-in. The 72-year-old woman had been half buried, and died two days later. Hartz was shaken but recovered. Nominate a Hero. Myths tell of ancient gods placing heroes among the stars. Some stories tell of heroes’ eyes becoming stars to watch over their children. ‘Hero’ comes from ancient words meaning demi [half, unfinished, almost]-god and to watch over, to protect. A “Random Act of Kindness” qualifies, as in this post’s video. Imagine a world where everyone goes to bed a hero. Wouldn’t more monuments honoring these kinds of heroes be great? Succeed and Soar! Novels, Part 2 of 2: How to Finish
Consider Someday you’re going to be someone’s favorite author. –Flash Fiction Online Have you ever started a project with sparkling visions of the finish? Then, halfway through, an enormous gap opens, and the project has nowhere to go. In the world of concrete and steel, that happened while building two of Pittsburgh’s bridges. The first structure is officially called the Fort Duquesne Bridge. After years, “The Bridge to Nowhere’s” fix was seamless. Not so for the Birmingham Bridge where the huge mismatch remains visible. [See lower left side of photo at top of this post] ‘Mid Novel Slump’ is the notorious and insidious situation with a story’s beginning and ending can’t be, well, bridged. Why? In starting stories, the celebrated writer Ray Bradbury advised, “Find a character, like yourself, who will want something or not want something, with all his heart. Give him running orders. Shoot him off. Then follow as fast as you can go.” Too often, characters do run off and create situations where the beginning doesn’t seem capable of connecting to an ending. To keep going, Writers Digest recommends giving the ‘supporting cast more page time.” Because “Act One introduces [the main character] … it’s in Act Two that the supporting cast comes to life.” This article also explains the “Rule of Three,” a valuable story-building tool. Food Combining
Consider Your diet is the foundation on which everything else is built. – Cynthia Perkins, M.Ed. In preparing this post, I was reminded that our mouth, stomach and intestines exist to gather fuel and eliminate whatever doesn’t nourish. With the many tasty delights awaiting during a food extravaganza like Thanksgiving, understanding digestion could help. Ancient Nutrition describes ‘Food Combining’ as a way of eating that takes the ‘stress off of the digestive system by eating simple, appropriately portioned meals consisting of foods that work well when paired together.” Some foods require different enzymes and take longer to digest than others. When the stomach receives varied foods at the same time, processing delays and digestive difficulties can arise. The Living Proof Institute reminds that, “bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, … feeling digestive discomfort or fatigue after eating isn’t normal. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn’t happen. – Winston Churchill Updated January 30, 2025 This post was prompted because we are in the primary election season and, yesterday, I saw where the Fern Hollow Bridge near my home fell a hundred feet. I remain amazed and thankful that at 7am on January 28, so few were on this heavily-trafficked structure and all survived. Read more. Reports I’ve heard about why the bridge’s faults weren’t fixed include gas taxes intended for this purpose paid for state police patrols in towns that can’t afford their own law enforcement. Keep in mind, taxes allow governments to provide health and human services, schools, public transportation, our military, courts, community and regional development, parks and recreational spaces, arts events, higher education and research, waste management, etc. Recently, citizens of my county voted to pay higher taxes to improve our public libraries. I suspect most people don’t like paying taxes that buy ‘Pork Barrels,’ Here are Examples. So, when political candidates promise to cut taxes, consider asking: What government services will end? How will schools and community resources improve? Also, will these politicians lower taxes by reducing pork barrel spending? How will Federal perks be affected? As candidates seek our votes, know how our support be repaid? When elected, how will those politicians spend tax dollars to improve the world and grow prosperity. Because of the fear-mongering that saturates some campaigns, consider how candidates feel about Waverly Presbyterian’s green sign [footsteps from the collapsed bridge]. Life Well Lived #6: Selecting Memory
What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us. – Helen Keller Every time folks new to Pittsburgh visit, I offer tours. They always include Mount Washington [see gorgeous picture] then the dancing fountains below. One night as Ron from Georgia watched the leaping sprays, he asked why I was smiling, for no apparent reason. My answer: I was remembering a fun visit with my grandson and his cousin. LEAP(ing) Day
Whatever you are ready for is ready for you. — Reverend Ike A Meditation: LEAP(ing) Day U.S. Route 30 is Pennsylvania’s portion of this country’s first coast-to-coast road. The Lincoln Highway opened on Halloween in 1913, when cars like Brush Roadsters, Mighty Michigans and Bailey Electrics putt-putted on modified buggy wheels from Times Square, New York City to Lincoln Park, San Francisco. In The Power of Myth, Joseph Campbell said that the adventures we’re ready for are the ones we get. When driving Route 30 between Bedford and Somerset one February, I topped a hill, snapped a picture, took a breath and wondered: What awaits on the way through this wintry world and beyond that distant horizon? I may also have asked, What leaps must I make, ready or not? People who find spiritual meaning in numbers [numerologists] believe that the once-in-four-year combination of 2 + 29 [February 29] offers special opportunities to “catch up in our own lives.” According to Forever Consciousness, 2 involves realizing the soul’s purpose and 11 [29 or 2+9 = 11] signifies awakening.
