I can take the next thing that comes along. โ Eleanor Roosevelt Todayโs post was to share a bold quote from a list of Eleanor Rooseveltโs inspiring words.ย Drat! Darn! And, well, Phooey! When looking for more information, I learned Mrs. Roosevelt never said, โDo one thing every day that scares you.โย QuoteInvestigatorย reports that phrase is from Mary Schmichโs June, 1997 essay.ย In it, theย Chicago Tribuneย columnist advised, โDonโt worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum.โ Schmich further suggested that, every day, we sing, floss and โDonโt waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes youโre ahead, sometimes youโre behind. The race is long and, in the end, itโs only with yourself.โ Forty years before, in 1960 Eleanor Roosevelt published โYou Learn by Livingโ with a chapter titled, โFearโthe Great Enemy.โ There, Roosevelt wrote, โFear has always seemed to me to be the worst stumbling block which anyone has to face. It is the great crippler. Looking back, it strikes me that my childhood and my early youth were one long battle against fear.โ In time, the First Lady realized, โYou gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. โฆ [Then] You are able to say to yourself, โI lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.โโ Roosevelt reminds, โThe danger lies in refusing to face the fear, in not daring to come to grips with it. If you fail anywhere along the line it will take away your confidence. You must make yourself succeed every time.ย You must do the thing you think you cannot do.โ Whatโs a good way to pursue something special but scary? Try this postโs video. Dance along! Life Well Lived #7: Change

To change is to be vulnerable.ย And to be vulnerable is to be alive. โAlexis De Veaux A phrase that makes me smile [sometimes grimace] are Senecaโs words about how those who go willingly are guided by The Fates while those who resist are dragged.ย I smile thinking of times Iโve resisted changes of habits, work and associations and had to be dragged in new directions. Change can be difficult. It means stepping away from the familiar and into the unknown. It can also be vital. In researching good reasons for change, I found a list of ten reasons, including new opportunities for happiness and the fresh starts that add excitement to life. Read more. Another list offers twelve benefits, such as the increased resilience, versatility and confidence that build strength. Read more. Change. Hmmm. Now Iโm thinking: What must be modified before The Fates drag me again? What door must close so that new ones open? How can I feel more alive? The answers are challenging. How about you? When has a change helped? Why not share a few words?
