For the past week, Iโve been rethinkingย whether โforgive and forgetโ is a good idea and found recommendations likeย Sydney Banksโ, โIf we can forgive everyone, regardless of what he or she may have done, we nourish the soul and allow our whole being to feel good.โ
The spiritual teacherย Sri Chimnoy, who lived to uplift humanity, advised, โForgive, you will have happiness. Forget, you will have satisfaction. Forgive and forget, you will have everlasting peace, within and without.โ
Frederick Lenzย said, โOur task is to bring ourselves resolutely more and more into light, to forgive and forget …because to remember them is only to keep problems in mind.โย Hmmm. Sometimes, keeping problems in mind is a good idea.
I smile when readingย Confuciusโs advice, โBefore you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.โ My smile broadens and brightens when reading Sue Graftonโs, words, “I know there are people who believe you should forgive and forget. For the record, I’d like to say I’m a big fan of forgiveness as long as I’m given the opportunity to get even first.”
William P. Youngย had a point when he said, โForgiveness is not about forgetting. It is about letting go of another personโs throat.โ The source for the nextย quote wasn’t located, โI prefer to hate and remember than forgive and forget.โ My next post will show why these points of view have merit.ย After all, the goal here is to Succeed and Soar.
